Application Solutions: Indoor Sports Lighting

July 18, 2024

Indoor sports LED lighting is crucial for creating a safe, enjoyable, and high-performance environment in sports facilities. Here are the key aspects to consider for indoor sports LED lighting:

Enhanced Visibility and Safety

LED lighting provides uniform illumination across playing surfaces, eliminating dark spots and shadows that can hinder player performance and increase injury risks. The improved visibility allows athletes to react faster and make more accurate decisions, creating a safer playing environment. For sports like ice hockey, high light levels and appropriate contrast are critical to keep the small, fast-moving puck visible at all times.

Spectator Experience

Quality LED lighting enhances the spectator experience by providing vivid, true-to-life colors with a high color rendering index (CRI). This makes it easier for fans to distinguish team jerseys and follow the action. LED lights also produce less glare and flicker compared to traditional lighting, reducing eye strain and visual discomfort for spectators.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

LED lights are significantly more energy-efficient than traditional lighting systems, consuming less power while producing more lumens per watt. Sports facilities can save up to 50-70% on energy bills by upgrading to LED lighting. The longer lifespan of LEDs also reduces maintenance costs and frequency of replacements.

Flexibility and Instant Illumination

Unlike traditional lighting that may require warm-up time, LED lights turn on instantly, ensuring immediate full brightness. This is particularly useful for quick lighting adjustments during events. LED systems also offer dimming capabilities and smart controls, allowing facility operators to tailor lighting for specific events or create unique atmospheres.

Sport-Specific Considerations

Different indoor sports have unique lighting requirements:

Badminton: Strict requirements for illumination, visual comfort, and uniformity due to the similarity between shuttlecock color and background walls.

Swimming pools: Fixtures must be corrosion-resistant to withstand humid and salty environments.

Tennis: Uniform, glare-free, high light level solution to ensure the ball is always clearly visible.

Basketball: Bright, glare-free lighting with fixtures robust enough to resist vibrations and shocks from high-speed balls.

Lighting Standards and Design

When designing indoor sports lighting, it's crucial to consider:

1. Light levels: Different sports may have varying light level requirements, typically ranging from 300 to 750 lux for recreational to competitive play.

2. Uniformity: Ensure even light distribution across the playing surface to avoid dark spots or shadows.

3. Glare control: Use low-glare lights to enhance visibility and safety.

4. Color rendering: Accurate color perception is important for both players and spectators.

5. Compliance: Adhere to international and national lighting standards to ensure safety and optimal performance conditions.

By carefully considering these factors and working with lighting professionals, sports facilities can create an optimal indoor environment that enhances performance, safety, and enjoyment for all users while benefiting from the energy efficiency and cost savings of LED technology.

FEATURED INDOOR SPORTS LIGHTING PROJECTS

  • XJ-HBS200W use in Hockey Field, Canada.

    Product NO: XJ-HBS200W

In a significant project at a hockey field in Canada, we successfully implemented our XJ-HBS200W High Bays (140 lm/W) to replace 92 units of 400W metal halide lights. After thorough preparation and negotiations, the Canadian end-user accepted our solution.

By dimming all lights to 50% brightness, the field achieved the same Foot-Candle (FC) levels as with the previous 400W lights, resulting in impressive energy savings of up to 75%. For professional games, the lights can be adjusted to higher wattage settings easily, ensuring optimal lighting conditions as needed.

This solution not only enhances energy efficiency but also meets the high standards required for professional sports, making it a successful and sustainable lighting upgrade for the hockey field.

  • XJ-HBS High Bay in Tennis Court, Italy

    Product NO: XJ-HBS

In this tennis court project in Italy, we initially used the XJ-HBS High Bay with a 25° beam angle. While it met the Lux requirements, the lighting was not uniformly distributed. We then suggested switching to a 90° beam angle to achieve better uniformity across the court.

The customer was very pleased with our professional solution, and the improved lighting has enhanced the enjoyment of the games.

  • XJ-HBS240W Used in Rugby Field at University of Mississippi

    Product NO: XJ-HBS240W-2

This project involved installing XJ-HBS240W-2 High Bays at the University of Mississippi's rugby field. The field size is 127m x 100m, and we installed a total of 160 units of 240W high bays and 40 units of 100W high bays to replace 160 units of 1000W and 40 units of 600W Metal Halide (MH) lights. The lights are mounted at a height of 9 meters.

To address customer concerns about glare (UGR), we used frosted glass to reduce glare while maintaining optimal illumination. Post-installation, the ground reached 600 lux, which initially seemed too bright. Responding to the customer's additional requirement to light the two side flags, we designed a solution and provided 32 units of 150W flood lights.

The project resulted in a perfect outcome, greatly satisfying the customer with enhanced lighting and functionality across the rugby field and side areas.

  • XJ-HBL Series LED High Bay Light Used in Gym, Germany

    Product NO: XJ-HBL

This project involved installing our XJ-HBL series LED High Bay Lights in a gym in Germany. To ensure the lighting was soft and non-glaring, we recommended using frosted glass. The customer quickly accepted our suggestion, and we proceeded with the Dialux calculation.

The customer was very satisfied with the results. After installation, they remarked that the high bay lights provided excellent light distribution, creating a uniform and pleasant environment for gym users.
